During class within the past few weeks, we discussed one
question that seemed to strike a few bad nerves. That question was “Do you feel
that Google is the most important corporation is the world?” Upon reading this
question, I felt oddly insulted having to even justify why Google is not the
most important corporation in the world. I want to set the record straight
before I take my stance. Google is very powerful, and is in my opinion one of
the strongest, if not the strongest, corporation in the world. Google has had
the opportunity and privilege to keep expanding even when the American economy
has been plummeting. But that power does not mean it is the most important
corporation in the world. Google is excellent if you want to obtain quick
knowledge or find a specific item that you want to purchase in the near future.
However, Google is absolutely useless in times of death and health issues.
Google is
not and will never be the most important corporation in the world. Let’s say
that you are just casually browsing around on your computer through Google.
Then, all of a sudden, you feel a sharp pain going through your left arm, and
you feel your chest starting to feel tighter and heavier and your breathing is
becoming abnormal. The first thing someone would do at that time would be to
Google their symptoms and figure out what is going on. Then suddenly they
realize they are having a heart attack, but as soon as they learn of this the
heart attack sets in, and they collapse to the ground. If no one is around to see
what is going on, and you cannot physically get to a cell phone to call 911,
you may be out of luck. This example is to demonstrate the true usage of
Google. Google is solely an information center that can tell you what is
occurring with the hopes of stopping it. However, Google will never be that
corporation that does the “stopping”. This is why I feel hospitals and
corporations devoted to the health and well being of others are the most
important corporations in the world, not Google.
Google can
be considered a very efficient and mostly reliable first step towards a desired
goal. But Google will never be the tool that will get you to the finish line.
In times of illness and need of medical help, Google is not going to keep you
alive, and you can’t use Google if you are not alive. Hospitals and other
medical units that aim towards the well being of society deserve more credit
than they get, and I am fortunate to be able to speak my mind through this
question. In the consumer market that we live in, people are losing sight of
the important things in life. Google may be useful and life altering, but it
will never be life saving. Google is all for information, but will never
complete a task or perform an action for you, which is why it should never be
considered the most powerful corporation in the world.
