The
Expansion of Google
After reading chapter eight of The Shallows, by Nicholas Carr, there was one quote that Carr
discussed that I found interesting. It
was a statement from the CEO of Google, Larry Page, where he had said that
Google is “striving to ‘systematize everything’ it does” (150). I believe that Google is doing exactly that
however, not necessarily systematize everything they do, but more to systematize
the internet and technology as a whole. In
order for this to achieve this goal, they must expand themselves to other kinds
of technologies and not just a search engine that appears on their
website. I noticed this when I was
searching for articles on different websites and below the search box said, “Powered
by Google”, which got me started to think on how Google has expanded throughout
the past decade and made themselves such a prominent company when it comes to
making things easier and convenient for people who use their services. Many internet users make their home page on
their web browsers Google, making it the first website they see every time they
open the browser. So, when they want to go to a website, they don’t type in the
URL, they just begin to type on the home page and Google will search it and
show the results in a matter of seconds without even pressing enter.
Not only has Google expanded their services to other
websites on the internet but they have also expanded by purchasing other large
websites such as YouTube and even Blogger, the website that I am now writing
this blog. Google has an endless list of
services that they provide; which all seem astray from just the original web
search Google began with. For example
there are Google Calendar and Gmail, both have totally different uses. All of Google’s services are all connected
accounts and are “systematic” as said by Larry Page.
Throughout the years, as the internet develops and goes
through changes, it seems that Google is only getting larger, even including
outside of the internet realm. Google owns
a large brand of smart phones which is android.
Most recently Google changed the name of the android market to “Google
Play”, where android users can purchase games, eBooks, and now music. Before,
apps and music were found in different locations, but now they are all in the
same place, again, making it more “systematic”.
Google is the number one ranked website that is used the
most in the world, showing just how powerful Google is in today's society.

ReplyDeleteDidn't know as much as I do now about Google's history until I read the book and your post.
