We use the Internet in many ways, one being finding various information
by searching words through various search engines. Weather we know if these are
credible search engines is beyond our understanding. We often take the first
piece of information given to us because we think it is credible and want to
find the easy way out. One search engine, which was talked about in class,
was Google. Being the number one used website in the world it is clear that
many people use it. Google has both positive and negative aspects to it. I
think in many ways Carr is saying this when he is describing Google because he
explains how Google makes its profits and the way in which Google works. He
says on page 160 “Google’s range of complements has extended into ever more
industries” obviously describing how successful Google is. I think Google more
than anything is just a search engine people tend to depend on. I would say
Google is two words, easy and convenient. Its dependable because everyone uses
it and has been used it for many years. I don’t think that Google in
necessarily a bad thing but I do think that it is not credible. The fact that
it makes websites more popular by clicking on it is somewhat frustrating for
the users of Google, if I search something I am expecting it to be credible
useful information and with using Google I don’t feel like that. I feel as
though the main source of Google is to make money. Google is a cooperation
looking to make its cooperation larger and bring in money. Many websites work
that way. In class we talked about how they went through various shades of the
color blue to use for their appearance. Although I believe they should spend
more time looking into better things like not having useless websites I think I
would be more intrigued. Personally I don’t think that it would matter what
color blue they used, however it’s a website and like I said a cooperation. Cooperation’s
strive to make money, attracting people in is one of the main uses of a search
engine.
I find that often times
these days websites, specifically search engines are no longer considering
themselves for just using or finding information but spending a lot of time of
what draws the attention of the readers. Comparing it to many things humans
tend to do I think they are beginning to focus of the smaller things rather
then the bigger things for example finding better credible information. Carr
says on page 173 that “Google is motivated by a desire to in Eric Schmidt’s words
use technology to solve problems that have never been solved before.” But I disagree
when it think that Google is no longer motivated by the desire to use technology
to solve problems anymore but motivated by the new advances and competitiveness
with other search engines to continue to be the number one website used
throughout the world. People fail to realize that Google is not as important
and people make it out to believe. I think that it no longer has an interest in
the users but rather attracting the users and making it more useful and easier
for them instead of focusing on the information it is providing. –Salena Zona
I completely agree with what Salena has to say. Website no longer care about the way their personal website looks or says. They just care about pleasing the public. They are losing their individuality. She is right by saying Google is not as important as people make it seem. It may be full of information but it is not always correct and not always relevant. Get off your lazy butt and go find out some information at the library. People need to get out and go do something rather than always relying on their technology to entertain themselves.
