Printed or Digital Books

As our society is evolving, we are seeing less paper and more digital things. Printed books vs. Digital books is becoming a huge topic. Electronic devices are becoming more and more popular in everyday life and have advantages when it comes to reading. Paper book are timeless and classic and offer many advantages. You can find books in easily accessible places such as the local bookstore or library. They are easily carried around. Books to do not cause excessive strain on a persons eyes. Paper book do have some cons though. Carrying more than one around might be heavy or uncomfortable. Books can be almost impossible to carry around on how many books you need for classes or work that day. Books require some type of light source whether it is sunlight, a house light, or a lamp. It is not possible to read in the dark. Books are not environmentally friendly and use a countless number of trees per year.

Ebooks are easily portable and as technology is evolving they are getting lighter and lighter. Thousands of books are on the Internet can be accessed within minutes. Only one device has to be carried around. If the ebook is used for a class, a student could easily take notes without destroying the pages. Ebooks are environmentally friendly. No need to cut down trees and hurt the environment. Lighting condition do not matter when reading an Ebook. It can be early morning, mid-afternoon, or late evening. Although Ebooks sound great, there are some disadvantages when it comes to electronic reading. Ebooks use electricity and can die after a couple of hours of use. When using electronic devices it causes people to strain their eyes and could eventually lead to damaged eye sight.

As Carr discusses in his book, electronic devices are not as durable as books. If something is spilt on the device it is mostly likely ruined. Books will just get wet and hopefully the words will not run. A book can be thrown or dropped without the possibility of it breaking.  Not to mention a book can be taken anywhere, such as the beach, a park, or on vacation. An Ebook or laptop can cost hundreds of dollars. Even though they can hold more books and the books cost less sometimes the overall price is more expensive. A lot of the time when buying a book online the author gets little or no money for what they have written. It is just like illegal music. Ebooks can be shared from person to person. Printed books have the same problem. They can be passed from person to person with out the author having any benefit. When it comes to picking a side, it is hard to choose. I would suggest use a laptop or and ebook for school or work related purposes. A person should then use books for leisure activities and for fun.
