In chapter 8, Carr says "In Google's world, which is the world we enter when we go online, there's little place for the pensive stillness of deep reading or the fuzzy indirection of contemplation." I believe that this is true. When we search for answers online sometimes we believe any results that come up in the Search Engine because they are endorsed by popular websites such as Google, and we do not realize who the authors of these websites are and that they may not have any more knowledge about the topic that you or I may have. As a generation, we need to come to the realization that everything that is up on the Internet is not necessarily true, and we need to critique the information that we do find especially on general search engines, such as Google.
Also I agree with Carr that if we do searches online for information we want them to be quick and easy and that is why people use Google because it fits both of these requirements. However, it is scary to think how much power Google has in the Internet world today. They make thousands of dollars off of every single click made on the website, and they now own every single person's search history and they can use that to choose which Ads you see when you search on their page. I feel as if this is almost a invasion of one's privacy, one can't even do a simple online search without being harassed with Ads meant to distract us because they are personalized for our specific likes and dislikes. It is as if Google wants us to be distracted constantly, and that is how they stay in business.

  1. I never knew until i read Carr that google could view our browsing history. That is an invasion of privacy. i feel that's almost the same thing as a potential boss viewing someone's Facebook. it's a privacy issue.

  2. Theresa,
I agree with this completely. It took me until High school to realize that everything that comes up on your first search may not be the best or even creditable to your answer. Which makes sense similar to what you said we use the internet for convenience other wise if we had the time to read an entire book, to find one e find the answer, maybe we would. (I probably would not living in such a fast paced world)
I also agree with the ad’s becoming out of hand, how they target you for certain ads, and actually last night Google asked me for my phone number saying it was important. After hearing Professor LeBlanc talk in class I never realized how creepy it really has become but it is. To top it off they make millions of this. Scary world.
